(Thursday, June 4, 1964, late show scheduled to begin 9:15 p.m. Central European Time) — The Beatles began their first world tour tonight, performing two shows for 4,400 fans at K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The first two shows at the venue were scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., Central European Time.

An incomplete audience tape of the late show, apparently supplied by Danish fan Arno Guzek, includes eight of the nine songs performed, with a break in the tape following “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

Drummer Ringo Starr remained in London, having been hospitalized with tonsillitis and pharyngitis the previous day.

His temporary replacement, Jimmie Nicol, had to swiftly adjust to life in the whirlwind of Beatlemania for the next five dates of the tour.

Prior to the final song, Paul absentmindedly introduces the newest Beatle: “Big hand for our drummer Ring—uh, Jimmy!” The concert’s opening song surfaced several years later from a poor-quality source.
