(Sunday, June 14, 1964, evening Australian Eastern Standard Time) — The Beatles, reunited with drummer Ringo Starr, plus Starr’s temporary replacement of 12 days (due to Ringo’s illness), Jimmie Nicol, held a one-time joint conference at Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne.

Allan Lappin, from 3UZ Radio, taped separate interviews with John and George following the press conference.

John chats about the Soviet Union, his book, the army, and mods and rockers, while George expresses enthusiasm for pirate radio stations.

The press conference was Nicol’s final duty as Starr’s stand-in. In the evening they held a party, without Nicol, until 4 a.m.

At 8:00 a.m. AEST, Monday, June 15, 1964, Nicol left the Southern Cross Hotel. Accompanied by manager Brian Epstein, he was driven to the airport where he was given a final agreed fee of £500, as well as a gold watch with the engraving: “To Jimmy, with appreciation and gratitude – Brian Epstein and The Beatles.”

Nicol didn’t say goodbye to The Beatles; they were sleeping off the previous night’s party, and he felt he shouldn’t disturb them.

The group was celebrating their reunion with Ringo Starr, who had missed the early part of their world tour after being struck down by acute tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
