(Saturday, August 10, 1974) — Former Beatle John Lennon flew from Los Angeles to Denver, Colorado, and drove 90 minutes to the Caribou Ranch recording studio today to provide guitar and backing vocals on Elton John’s cover of the Lennon-(Paul) McCartney classic “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” first heard on The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967.

Caribou Ranch was built by producer James William Guercio in 1972 in a converted barn on ranch property in the Rocky Mountains near Nederland, Colorado, on the road that leads to the ghost town of Caribou.

Lennon would be credited under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O’Boogie (Winston being Lennon’s given middle name).

Elton John’s version would be released as a single on Nov. 15, 1974, and would top the Billboard pop chart for two weeks in January 1975 as well as the Canadian RPM national singles chart for four weeks spanning January and February.

The two men would reunite on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 28, 1974, to perform the song live at Madison Square Garden.
