(Tuesday, August 18, 1964, 4:15 p.m. PDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — A few hours after leaving Canadian airspace, The Beatles arrived in Los Angeles this afternoon for a brief stop (to go through customs, meet the press, and stretch their legs) before continuing their journey to San Francisco.

The iconic band is set to begin their first full North American tour tomorrow night at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California.

The arrival and press conference (starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. PDT) were documented in a Hollywood Star newsreel, which also featured footage of their return to Los Angeles a few days later.

Around one thousand fans gathered in the terminal to catch a glimpse of the Fab Four as their Pan Am flight touched down.

The Beatles, accompanied by manager Brian Epstein and road manager Neil Aspinall, emerged from the customs building and posed for photos, waving to their enthusiastic supporters from the building’s staircase.

Notably, all the band members except Paul McCartney were wearing sunglasses.

Following the press conference, the Beatles dispersed for individual interviews with local radio, TV, and press reporters (at approximately 5:00 p.m. PDT).

KRLA disc jockey Dave Hull had interviewed John and George during their brief stopover in Los Angeles May 25, but now he had the chance to speak with all four.
