(Saturday, August 22, 1964, approximately 6:00 p.m. PDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles, after one false start, crossed the border this afternoon, flying from Seattle to Vancouver, BC, for their first-ever show in Canada, marking the fifth show of the band’s 25-city, 32-show North American tour.

Due to confusion surrounding their movements, The Beatles’ airport arrival was one of the quietest on their tour. Most fans had gathered around a downtown hotel, anticipating their arrival.

The plane originally carrying The Beatles to Canada was turned back to Seattle after customs officials reported the pilot had failed “to clear properly.”

When The Beatles finally arrived at the Royal Canadian Air Force hangar at Vancouver International Airport, only 130-200 people were on hand. The well-behaved crowd consisted mostly of air force and mounted police families, air cadets, and other air force personnel from the base across the field from the civilian terminal.

The Beatles passed through the hangar to waiting limousines and buses that took their entourage across town.

Security patrols advised youngsters who had shown up earlier to line the roads leading from the airport for the best view of the tour.

An officer reported that four girls, aged 12 or 13, had sneaked onto the base during the night. They were discovered huddled under a short flight of stairs with one blanket and were turned over to police.

Some fans had been outside the hotel for 12 hours, eagerly awaiting the band’s arrival.
