(Sunday, August 23, 1964, approximately 7:00 p.m. PDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles’ press conference at the Cinnamon Cinder nightclub, partly owned by KRLA disc jockey Bob Eubanks, descended into chaos tonight as teenage girls, some posing as reporters, clamored for attention on the band’s 25-city, 32-show North American tour.

Eubanks, who arranged and emceed the Beatles’ Hollywood Bowl performance that night, presided over the event, temporarily sidelining the band’s press officer, Derek Taylor.

The press conference began with a teenage girl keeping a reporter updated with personal tidbits about the band, particularly Paul McCartney’s relationship with Jane Asher.

The first official question, about a Seattle psychiatrist who labeled the Beatles as menaces, was met with George Harrison’s quip, “Psychiatrists are menaces, too.”

A female fan’s attempt to engage Paul McCartney — “Do you agree, Paul? Paul?” — was quickly rebuked by a newsman: “Sit down! … Now, look—don’t start going up there, girlie!”

The Beatles also stated they had no plans to play behind the Iron Curtain, expressed their desire to meet Paul Newman and Jayne Mansfield while in Hollywood, shared their general disinterest in sports except for swimming, and affirmed their admiration for Elvis Presley’s early records.
