(Sunday, August 23, 1964, 9:30-10:05 p.m. PDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles performed tonight for 18,700 fans at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, marking the sixth show in the fifth city of their first full North American Tour.

Capitol Records initially planned to record the Beatles’ February 1964 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, but they couldn’t secure the necessary approval from the American Federation of Musicians.

Six months later, KRLA DJ Bob Eubanks booked the band’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl, where Capitol recorded the show with the aim of releasing a live album in America.

However, the sound quality of the tapes was deemed inadequate for commercial release. Despite this, Capitol used a 48-second excerpt of “Twist and Shout” from the concert on the 1964 documentary album The Beatles’ Story.

Six more tracks from tonight’s performance were released in 1977 on EMI’s The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl.

Two additional tracks were included in an expanded version of the album in 2016, coinciding with the release of the documentary film The Beatles: Eight Days a Week.
