(Thursday, August 27, 1964, noon MDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — Ringo Starr was interviewed today by KRLA-AM’s Jim Steck as The Beatles departed at Stapleton Field in Denver (for Cincinnati) during the sixth stop of the band’s first full North American Tour.

As the band departed Denver, they also parted company with Steck and Dave Hull, who had to fly back to LA at KRLA’s expense.

They take the opportunity to tape one final farewell message from Ringo, who asks, “Aren’t you coming with us?” Steck responds dejectedly, “No. Not this time.”

The drummer bids adieu to Los Angeles listeners: “It’s been fab bein’ here. Great place you got here. Hope to come back.”

During the afternoon flight from Denver to Cincinnati, the Beatles were presented with a Melody Maker award as best international group.

The occasion was documented by Larry Kane’s tape recorder and then shipped off to an awards luncheon, presumably in London, to be played for the assembled guests.

Each Beatle gives a short speech of gratitude, with George’s “Hi there, Beatle People!” getting a big laugh from his bandmates.
