Paul McCartney filmed performing in backyard of EMI studios in London for ‘One Hand Clapping’ project 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Aug 30 1974)

(Thursday, August 29, 1974, during sessions for One Hand Clapping) — On the fifth day of Paul McCartney’s One Hand Clapping project, the former Beatle was filmed today performing ten songs, sitting in a chair playing acoustic guitar, in the backyard at EMI Studios in London.

The ten songs included: “Blackbird” (four takes), “Country Dreamer,” “Twenty Flight Rock,” “Peggy Sue,” “I’m Gonna Love You Too,” “Great Day,” “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Loving You,” “We’re Gonna Move,” and “Blackpool.”

Interestingly, this segment was not included in the final version of the “One Hand Clapping” documentary.

Additionally, on this day, Paul McCartney and Wings were also filmed during the recording of a version of “Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five,” which was included in One Hand Clapping.

Three additional songs were also performed to conclude the weeks’ sessions, including: “Freight Train,” “Cumberland Gap,” and “Rock Island Line.” (three songs, including “Jet,” “Junior’s Farm” and “Soily” would be re-recorded in October 1974.

The project, envisioned as a “rockumentary,” was directed by David Litchfield and featured live performances of McCartney, Wings, and Beatles hits, along with a few covers.

The recording sessions, set to span over five days, were part of a film project capturing the band in a studio setting. The film would include interviews with the band members and live studio performances aimed at creating a potential live album.

Although the TV sales brochure was prepared, both the film and the album remained unreleased at the time.

Over the years, bootleg copies surfaced, and some tracks were included in special editions of other McCartney and Wings albums.

The film “One Hand Clapping” was officially released on November 2, 2010, as part of the box set reissue of “Band on the Run,” marking the debut release in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection.

Fans eagerly anticipate the album’s release, scheduled for June 14, 2024, almost fifty years after the initial recording sessions.
