(Friday, September 4, 1964, 4:30 p.m. CDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles landed at Mitchell Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this afternoon, welcomed by nearly one thousand eager fans, as they embarked on the 12th stop of their first full North American tour.

Flying in from Indianapolis, the excitement was palpable, with local TV crews capturing interviews with some of the awaiting fans.

One teenage boy expressed his admiration for the band, though he claimed he wasn’t “gonna have a spaz attack over it.”

However, neither he nor any of the other fans had the chance to prove their composure. In an eleventh-hour decision, police and airport officials diverted the flight to land out of sight of the crowd.

News cameras caught glimpses of the band deplaning and swiftly being whisked away.

Shortly after, Captain Kondracki announced through a bullhorn to the disappointed crowd, “The Beatles are already on their way to the hotel.”

The astonished fans wailed in despair and felt a sense of rejection, their excitement dashed in an instant.
