(Friday, September 4, 1964, 1:00 p.m. EDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles departed from Weir Cook Airport this afternoon, heading to Milwaukee and concluding the 11th stop of their first full North American tour.

Ringo Starr had a particularly restless night, staying up until 4:00 a.m. chatting with journalist Chris Hutchins.

By 5:00 a.m., still unable to sleep, Starr convinced a couple of Indiana state troopers to give him a tour of Indianapolis and its surroundings, including a breakfast stop at a roadside diner.

Back at the motel, Starr managed to grab a few hours of sleep before the Beatles headed to the airport around 1:00 p.m. WISH-TV captured footage of groups of fans waiting outside the motel and at the airport to catch a glimpse of the band, including seven girls in matching outfits that spelled out “BEATLES.”

Paul McCartney was the only band member who seemed interested in shaking hands and signing autographs, taking the time to engage with fans while the others boarded the plane.
