(Monday, September 7, 1964, 12:30 a.m. EDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles landed at Malton Airport in Toronto early this morning on their chartered Electra airplane from Detroit, marking the band’s 14th stop on their first full North American tour.

Newsreel footage captured fans waiting behind a chain-link fence as the Beatles walked to a waiting limousine. Ringo Starr sat up front while John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison shared the back seat. Despite the late hour, Lennon wore his signature sunglasses.

McCartney rolled down the window to speak with journalists before the car sped off in a police motorcade, heading to the King Edward Hotel.

During the journey, McCartney’s shirt was torn by an overzealous fan. He and Starr were separated from Lennon and Harrison, but police quickly restored order, and they arrived safely at their suite. There, they discovered a 14-year-old girl hiding in a linen closet.
