(Monday, September 14, 1964, approximately 9:45 p.m. EDT during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles performed to a packed audience of 12,603 fans tonight at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, marking the iconic band’s only performance in the city.
Tickets for the highly anticipated show were priced at $5.90 each.
The Civic Arena, known as the world’s first major indoor sports stadium with a retractable roof, was filled with excitement as the band arrived at Greater Pittsburgh Airport at 4:36 p.m. in their Lockheed Electra airplane.
Greeted by a crowd of 4,000 fans, some of whom had been waiting since 9:00 a.m., The Beatles were swiftly escorted by 120 police officers, including 15 mounted on horseback.
The group was whisked away in a limousine, flanked by a police motorcycle escort, as throngs of teenage fans lined Parkway West to catch a glimpse of the motorcade.
Upon arriving at the Civic Arena, where 5,000 more fans eagerly awaited them, The Beatles held a brief press conference before enjoying a meal.
The evening’s entertainment began with opening acts The Bill Black Combo, The Exciters, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, and Jackie DeShannon.
The Beatles took the stage, delivering their standard 12-song setlist, which had become a staple of their tour. The set included energetic performances of crowd favorites like “Twist And Shout,” “She Loves You,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” and “Long Tall Sally.”
