(Friday, September 18, 1964, press conference at 7:30 p.m. CDT; during The Beatles’ 1964 North American tour) — The Beatles, in the midst of their first full North American tour, brought their trademark wit and charm to Dallas this evening during a news conference at Memorial Auditorium.

The event took place just before the band’s concert, their 24th stop on the tour.

Bert Shipp of WFAA-TV interviewed the Fab Four, capturing the spirit of the British invasion that has taken the U.S. by storm. The press conference was held backstage, where the band fielded questions with their usual mix of humor and irreverence.

When informed that some fans had eaten grass he walked on after their arrival, Ringo Starr quipped, “I hope they won’t get indigestion.”

In response to a question about the “Ringo for President” campaign, he jokingly added, “Gotta watch yourself down here,” a nod to the band’s awareness of Dallas’s recent history.

The press also probed the band’s feelings about their safety. John Lennon, in his typically candid style, remarked, “More so here, perhaps,” reflecting a heightened sense of caution.

George Harrison was asked if he intended to make the black turtleneck sweater his signature look, similar to Ringo’s rings. Wearing a shirt and tie at the time, George wryly replied, “Yeah, that’s why I’m wearing one now,” drawing laughter from the crowd.

The Beatles’ blend of humor and humility won over the Dallas press, setting the stage for another electrifying performance in a tour that has captivated audiences across the continent.
