(Sunday, September 22, 1974) — In a session shrouded in mystery, former Beatle Paul McCartney and his band Wings, recording under the alias “The Whippets,” laid down two unique tracks at EMI Studios today in London.
The session, held in the famed Studio Two, resulted in a double-sided 7-inch acetate featuring “Proud Mother” and “Tomorrow,” both of which offer rare glimpses into the band’s experimental phase.

Engineered by Geoff Emerick, “Proud Mother” was originally composed by McCartney as a jingle for the bread brand Mother’s Pride but was never commercially released. This session produced an extended version of the track, preserved on the acetate, later made available by Wings drummer Geoff Britton.
“Tomorrow,” also recorded during the session, revisits a song from Wings’ 1971 album Wild Life, this time as an instrumental version featuring synthesizers and horns in place of McCartney’s vocals.

The acetate, likely pressed in EMI’s lacquer room the next day, on Sept. 23, 1974, remains in VG+ condition, with only minor surface marks.
Britton, who received the acetate directly from McCartney, notes the unusual decision to use the alias “The Whippets” for this particular recording, adding a layer of intrigue to this rare piece of music history.
