(Friday, October 9, 1964, 6:15 p.m. BST; during The Beatles’ 1964 Autumn UK Tour) — The Beatles celebrated John Lennon’s 24th birthday in style tonight, launching their 1964 Autumn UK Tour with a thrilling performance at the Gaumont Cinema in central Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.

The concert marked the opening night of the band’s only British tour of the year, which is set to span 27 cities across the country with two shows daily.

Despite being delayed by heavy traffic on the A1 from London, and a brief stop by police officers seeking autographs, the Fab Four arrived two hours behind schedule but managed to keep their performance on track.

The first show began at 6:15 p.m., followed by a second at 8:40 p.m.

For their tour repertoire, The Beatles delivered a dynamic setlist featuring fan favorites such as “Twist and Shout,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” and “Long Tall Sally.” Other songs in their lineup included “Money (That’s What I Want),” “Things We Said Today,” “I Should Have Known Better,” “If I Fell,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” and “I’m Happy Just to Dance With You.”

The band, earning £850 for each day of the tour, was supported by a diverse lineup of acts, including The Rustiks, Sounds Incorporated, Michael Haslam, The Remo Four, Tommy Quickly, and Mary Wells, with Bob Bain serving as compère.
