Video: 'What You're Doing (Remastered 2009)'
(Monday, October 26, 1964, 7:30-10:00 p.m. GMT; during Beatles For Sale sessions) — The Beatles completed recording sessions for their fourth album Beatles For Sale tonight, finishing “What You’re Doing” at EMI Studio 2 in London.
They had previously recorded the song on Sept. 29-30, 1964, but neither attempts were satisfactory.
With new arrangement ideas in place, The Beatles taped a remake of “What You’re Doing” in seven takes, numbered 13-19.

Only three of these seven takes were complete, but “take 19” was the keeper.
The Beatles all played their usual instruments with vocals, John and George chiming in only on the first word of the first two phrases of each verse, instead of throughout as they had done in the first version.
They also perform harmonized “oohs” in the third phrase and then harmonize on the final word “me.”

There were at least two overdubs performed for the song, both having to do with Paul. He double-tracked his vocals throughout the song and then played a piano overdub for the bridge only.
The day’s final task was the recording and editing of Another Beatles Christmas Record, taped in five different takes.
The recording was edited and sent to Lyntone Records, which pressed flexi-discs to be distributed in December 1964 to members of the group’s UK fan club.
