(Saturday, November 28, 1964, 9:22:01 a.m. EST) — The United States successfully launched the Mariner 4 space probe from Cape Kennedy today, setting it on a course toward Mars just three weeks after the failed attempt with Mariner 3.

Traveling at 8,300 miles per hour, the fourth Mariner started off toward Mars on a seven-month journey.

On its original trajectory, the probe would have missed the Red Planet by 150,000 miles, but a correction would be made on Dec. 5, 1964.

Mariner 4 would make its closest approach (within 6,118 miles of Mars) and return television pictures on July 15, 1965.
