John Lennon officially ends Beatles partnership while on holiday at Disney World 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Dec 29 1974)

(Sunday, December 29, 1974) — John Lennon signed the paperwork that officially dissolved the Beatles today while on holiday at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Florida, ending one of the most storied chapters in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr had already signed the documents; Paul and George having signed them while together at the Plaza Hotel in New York on Dec. 19, 1974.

“Take out your camera,” Lennon reportedly instructed May Pang, his companion during his temporary separation from his wife, Yoko Ono. He wanted the moment captured for posterity.

Before signing, Lennon made a final call to George Harrison’s lawyer to clarify a few points, then, looking out the window, seemed lost in reflection.

According to Pang, Lennon appeared to replay the Beatles’ journey in his mind before picking up the pen. Then, in the unexpected backdrop of Disney World, he signed his name, officially ending the iconic band that changed music forever.
