U.S. Marines capture Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima and raise iconic flags in historic moment 80 years ago this hour (Feb 23 1945)

(Friday, February 23, 1945, noon JST; during the Battle of Iwo Jima, part of the Pacific Theatre of World War II) — Five U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy Corpsman were photographed today raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima (There were actually two flag-raisings this day, this was the second).

Captured by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press, the photograph came to be regarded as one of the most significant and recognizable images of the war, and possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time.
