(Monday, March 4, 1805, approximately noon local time) — President Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated today for a second term of office in the Senate Chamber of the United States Capitol with Chief Justice John Marshall administering oath of office.

Former New York Governor George Clinton was inaugurated as the 4th Vice President of the United States, replacing Aaron Burr (his political career ended by last year’s duel with Alexander Hamilton).

Jefferson and Clinton, who ran on the Democratic-Republican ticket, had defeated Federalists Charles C. Pinckney-Rufus King in the November-December 1804 general election.
