Video: 'Scopes Battles the Butler Act: The Fight for Evolution Theory - Decades TV Network'

(Saturday, March 21, 1925) — Tennessee Gov. Austin Peay today signed the Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of the Theory of Evolution in public schools.

The law was challenged that summer by Dayton teacher John T. Scopes and the American Civil Liberties Union in what became known as the Scopes Trial.
