(Wednesday, April 19, 1995, 9:02 am CDT) — A truck bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City this morning, killing 168 people and leaving another 680 people injured.

The attack destroyed or damaged 324 buildings within a 16-block radius, destroyed or burned 86 cars, and shattered glass in 258 nearby buildings, causing at least an estimated $652 million worth of damage.

Bomber Timothy McVeigh, a militia movement sympathizer and Persian Gulf War veteran, was later convicted of federal murder charges and executed.

McVeigh had sought revenge against the federal government for their handling of the Waco Siege, which ended in the deaths of 76 people exactly two years before the bombing, as well as for the Ruby Ridge incident in 1992.
