(Saturday, April 28, 1945, 4:10 p.m. CEST; during World War II) — Deposed Italian fascist dictator (and strong ally of German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler) Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were summarily executed today near Lake Como by Italian partisans as they attempted to flee the country.

The bodies of Mussolini and Petacci were taken to Milan and left in a suburban square, the Piazzale Loreto, for a large angry crowd to insult and physically abuse.

They were then hung upside down from a metal girder above a service station on the square.
