(Tuesday, June 22, 1965, 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Central European Time; during The Beatles’ 1965 European tour) — The Beatles brought their signature sound and electric stage presence to Lyon tonight, performing two sold-out concerts at the Palais d’Hiver as part of their ongoing European tour.

Arriving from Paris yesterday, the British quartet drew massive crowds and fervent local excitement during their brief stay in the southeastern French city. Fans lined the streets outside the venue, hoping for a glimpse of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

A French newsreel team captured fragments of the visit, including footage of the band posing backstage and performing onstage. Though the concert footage is dimly lit, it offers a rare visual record of the Fab Four’s appearance in Lyon.

The Beatles stayed overnight in the city following the shows. Their performances, lasting around 30 minutes each, featured a mix of hits and fan favorites that had the packed venue roaring with approval.

The band’s three-nation, eight-city, 15-show tour would continue through July 3, 1965.
