Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones arrested in Arkansas 50 years ago this hour (July 5 1975)

(Saturday, July 5, 1975, soon after 3:00 p.m. CDT) — Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was arrested this afternoon after a traffic stop escalated into drug and weapons charges during the band’s 1975 U.S. tour.

Richards and fellow guitarist Ronnie Wood (who would officially become a member of the group next spring) were en route from Memphis to Dallas for a concert when they stopped for lunch in this small southern Arkansas town on July 5, 1975. Shortly after, local police pulled Richards over for reckless driving.

Authorities said they smelled marijuana in the vehicle, prompting a search. No marijuana was found, but officers discovered a small amount of cocaine in a passenger’s briefcase. Richards, who passed a field sobriety test, was also cited for possession of an illegal weapon — a hunting knife.

Richards posted a $162.50 bond and was released before midnight. He later forfeited the bond by failing to appear in court.

In 2006, then-Gov. Mike Huckabee issued Richards a pardon for the reckless driving conviction, calling it a gesture of rock ’n’ roll diplomacy.

The incident remains one of several drug-related run-ins for Richards, whose legal troubles became nearly as legendary as his guitar riffs.
