(Monday, August 16, 1965) — Still basking in the roar of a record-breaking Shea Stadium crowd, The Beatles spent today resting at their Manhattan hotel before continuing their North American tour.

BBC Radio presenter Brian Matthew, who arrived from London yesterday, is traveling with the group to capture the first week of the tour for news programs and a forthcoming documentary, The Beatles Abroad. His reports include interviews recorded before and after the Shea concert, where more than 55,000 fans screamed over the music.

Backstage Sunday, Paul McCartney admitted to feeling nervous, while George Harrison discussed clearing customs and the armored van ride into the stadium.

After the show, John Lennon explained a banner draped inside the ballpark and described his carefree organ playing during “I’m Down.” Harrison also joked about hiring Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richard, who attended with Mick Jagger, to tune his guitars.

Harrison noted that long hair and mod fashions are now common enough in London’s Carnaby Street that the Beatles can walk there without turning heads.
