U.S. Vice President Henry Wilson, 63, dies in Washington, D.C. 150 years ago this hour (Nov 22 1875)

(Monday, November 22, 1875, 7:20 a.m. local time)Henry Wilson, the 18th vice president of the United States, serving since March 4, 1873, under President Ulysses S. Grant, suffered a fatal stroke today while working in the United States Capitol Building.

Wilson’s effectiveness as vice president was limited after he suffered a debilitating stroke in May 1873, and his health continued to decline until his fatal stroke.

Wilson, 63, was the fourth of seven U.S. Vice Presidents to die of natural causes while in office (1812-1912).

Following Wilson’s death, the office of vice president remained vacant since there was no constitutional provision to fill an intra-term vice-presidential vacancy until the Twenty-fifth Amendment in 1967. This meant that the Senate President Pro Tempore Thomas Ferry was now next in the line of presidential succession.

Ferry remained next in succession until March 4, 1877.
