‘Anthology 1’ compilation album by The Beatles peaks at #1 in USA 30 years ago today (Dec 9 1995)

(Saturday, December 9, 1995)Anthology 1, by The Beatles, with their first new song in 25 years, peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard‘s 200 album chart for three consecutive weeks.

It is the first in a quartet of albums with Anthology 2, Anthology 3, and Anthology 4, all of which tie in with the televised special The Beatles Anthology.

The album features rarities, outtakes and live performances from the period 1958–64, including songs with original bass player Stuart Sutcliffe and drummer Pete Best.

It also contains “Free as a Bird”, the first new Beatles song in 25 years, which was released as a single two weeks after Anthology 1.

It was the group’s 16th of an all-time record 19 number one albums on the chart (1964-2000).
