(Sunday, December 13, 1925) — Actor, comedian, singer, dancer and writer Dick Van Dyke was born Richard Wayne Van Dyke today in West Plains, Missouri.

Van Dyke would grow into one of America’s most enduring entertainers, with a career spanning radio, television, film and Broadway. After early work in nightclubs and on radio and TV, Van Dyke made his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys (1959). A year later, his breakout role as Albert Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Van Dyke became a household name in the 1960s as Rob Petrie on CBS’s The Dick Van Dyke Show, winning three Primetime Emmys for his performance. His television career continued with The New Dick Van Dyke Show, guest appearances on classics like Columbo and The Carol Burnett Show, and later starring roles in Diagnosis: Murder and Murder 101.

On film, Van Dyke is beloved for his turn as Bert the chimney sweep in Disney’s Mary Poppins (1964), along with memorable roles in Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Comic (1969), Dick Tracy (1990), Night at the Museum (2006, 2014), Curious George (2006) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Over the decades, Van Dyke has amassed a rare collection of honors, including six Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award. He was named a Disney Legend in 1998, received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2013, and was celebrated with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2020.

He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993 and the Television Hall of Fame in 1995.
