(Sunday, January 9, 1916, about 4:00 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. Eastern European Time; during the Gallipoli Campaign, part of the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I) — Allied forces today completed a full retreat from the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, ending a disastrous invasion of the Ottoman Empire.

The last British troops departed from Lancashire Landing yesterday at 4:00 a.m. The Newfoundland Regiment was part of the rearguard and withdrew today.

Among the first to land, remnants of The Plymouth Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry were the last to leave the Peninsula.

The Gallipoli Campaign resulted in 250,000 Allied casualties and greatly discredited Allied military command. Roughly an equal number of Turks were killed or wounded.
