Video: 'Wino Junko (2014 Remaster)'
(Wednesday, January 21, 1976, approximately 2:30 p.m.-2:00 a.m. GMT) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his British-American rock band Wings completed “Wino Junko” today, adding vocal overdubs in Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios in London.
The track featured the band’s guitarist Jimmy McCulloch on lead vocals (written by McCulloch and Colin Eric Allen) and was the first of 12 to be completed the group’s fifth studio album Wings at the Speed of Sound on Mar. 25, 1976 in the USA (Apr. 2, 1976 in the UK).
Drummer Joe English missed today’s session because of illness, but the others carried on, creating an atmospheric introduction to “Wino Junko” using bells, chimes, and shimmering electric piano.

Paul then focused on finding a striking effect for the repeated line “‘til you go down again” near the song’s end, initially trying a Mellotron tape loop with pitch-shifting before abandoning it as unsatisfying.
He turned instead to a vocoder, testing it by recording a brief message to Joe wishing him well and explaining the idea behind the effect. Calling the test “very rough,” Paul nonetheless went on to use the vocoder for vocal overdubs on “Wino Junko.”
