(Monday, April 11, 1814) — The Treaty of Fontainebleau established today ended the War of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleon Bonaparte, and forced him to abdicate unconditionally as Emperor of the French for the first time and banished to the island of Elba. Napoleon later escaped from Elba and returned to power in March 1815, until his downfall in the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.
