UN Security Council holds first meeting on U.S. soil 70 years ago this hour (Mar 25 1946)

(Monday, March 25, 1946, 2:31 p.m. EST) — The United Nations moved to its new interim location today in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, on the campus of Hunter College, part of the City College of New York system.

Hunter and its buildings were the site of the 51-member international body for almost five months, until Aug. 15, 1946.

British PM Attlee backs India’s right to independence 70 years ago this hour (Mar 15 1946)

(Friday, March 15, 1946) — British Prime Minister Clement Attlee declared in the House of Commons today the government’s intention to grant British India the right to full independence and not merely dominion status.

“India herself must choose as to what will be her future situation and her position in the world,” said Attlee, adding that “If … she elects for independence—and in our view she has a right to do so—it will be for us to help make the transition as smooth and easy as possible.”

Churchill visits FDR’s grave for first time 70 years ago today (Mar 12 1946)

(Tuesday, March 12, 1946) — Solemnly and without words, Winston Churchill walked through a century-old hemlock hedge today and into a rose garden where he placed a wreath on the grave of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the man who had shared his heaviest burdens during one the supreme periods of history (click here to watch video of Churchill’s visit to FDR’s grave at 4:01:18).

France recognizes Vietnam as an autonomous state 70 years ago today (Mar 6 1946)

(Wednesday, March 6, 1946; during War in Vietnam (1945–46)) — Ho Chi Minh signed the Ho–Sainteny agreement today with France which recognized Vietnam as an autonomous state in the Indochinese Federation and the French Union and permitted France to continue stationing troops in North Vietnam until 1951.

The priority for Ho at this time was the removal of 150,000 Chinese Nationalists who had been occupying (and looting) northern Vietnam since the end of World War II and was threatening to stay indefinitely.
