(Wednesday, May 2, 1945; part of The Holocaust during World War II) — The main camp of the extermination camp Jasenovac, established in Slavonia by the authorities of the German puppet Independent State of Croatia (NDH), was fully liberated today by Yugoslav Partisans.

From 1941 to 1945, an estimated 100,000 people were killed at Jasenovac.

(Tuesday, May 1, 1945, 9:40 p.m. CEST; during the Battle of Berlin on the Eastern Front during World War II) — The radio station Reichssender Hamburg interrupted their normal program tonight to announce that an important broadcast would soon be made. After dramatic funeral music by Wagner and Bruckner, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz (appointed as Hitler’s successor in his will) announced that Hitler was dead (Hitler had actually committed suicide the previous day).

Tonight’s announcement immediately followed the suicide of Hitler’s propaganda minister, Josef Goebbels.

(Monday, April 30, 1945, 3:30 p.m. CEST; during the Battle of Berlin on the Eastern Front during World War II) — As Soviet troops approached his Berlin bunker, Adolf Hitler committed suicide today along with his wife of one day, Eva Braun.

Hitler, 56, shot himself and Braun, 33, took cyanide.

In accordance with Hitler’s instructions, the bodies were burned in the garden behind the Reich Chancellery.
