Ted Kennedy says he’ll run in ’62 for U.S. Senate 50 years ago tonight (1961)

(Monday, December 4, 1961, evening) — Edward Kennedy, 29, youngest brother of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, stated tonight he is a candidate for the Senate seat former held by the president.

The statement was made at a meeting in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, of some 30 prospective delegates to the Democratic state convention next year.

(Thursday, November 2, 1961, 9:30 p.m. ET) — George and Dorothy’s nightly television viewing has been getting interrupted by Hazel who’s excuse is that her television set in her room is broken on tonight’s episode of the NBC-TV sitcom Hazel. It was the show’s first episode to be filmed in color.

Kennedy advisers arrive in Vietnam 50 years ago today (1961)

(Wednesday, October 18, 1961) — Two key advisers to U.S. President John F. Kennedy, General Maxwell Taylor and Walt Rostow, arrived today in Saigon, South Vietnam.

Their visit coincided with a serious flood. They would recommend a big increase in military aid, including U.S. combat troops disguised as flood fighters.

President Ngo Dinh Diem would say no to the troops. He needed U.S. support, but he wanted to keep control, and he wanted to keep the foreigners out.

Written by William Inge, the film stars Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty and was directed by Elia Kazan.
