Directed by Joel Coen, the film starred Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Harve Presnell and Peter Stormare.

(Wednesday, February 28, 1996, 8:00-11:00 p.m. EST) — A cheating ex-boyfriend and a voice full of breaks and wails brought four major Grammy Awards to Alanis Morissette, the 21-year-old Canadian songwriter who was the big winner tonight in the 38th Annual Grammy Awards at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Her Jagged Little Pill was named album of the year and best rock album; its first single, “You Oughta Know,” was named best rock song and best rock female vocal performance (click here for several clips from the show).

Actor, Khmer Rouge death camp survivor Haing S. Ngor murdered 20 years ago this hour (Feb 25 1996)

(Sunday, February 25, 1996, 8:45 p.m. PST) — Actor Dr. Haing S. Ngor, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role in The Killing Fields and was a real-life survivor of the Khmer Rouge death camps, was shot to death today outside his home in Los Angeles. He was 45.

Three gang members were later convicted of the murder.

(Friday, February 23, 1996)Trainspotting, a British black comedy crime drama film that follows a group of heroin addicts in a late 1980s economically depressed area of Edinburgh, Scotland, and their passage through life, opened today in Britain and Ireland.

Directed by Danny Boyle, the film starred Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald.
