(Saturday, February 10, 1996) — World chess champion Garry Kasparov lost the first game of a match today in Philadelphia against an IBM computer dubbed “Deep Blue.”

Kasparov ended up winning the match, 4 games to 2; he was defeated by Deep Blue in a rematch the following year.

In an election-year State of the Union Message intended far more for voters than for the Republican-controlled Congress, Clinton separated himself from Democratic orthodoxy, twice pronouncing that the “era of big government is over.”

(Wednesday, December 20, 1995, 9:41:28 p.m. EST) — An American Airlines Boeing 757 en route from Miami to Cali, Colombia, slammed into a mountain tonight, killing all but four of the 163 people aboard.

The Colombian Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics determined the crash was caused by navigational errors by the flight crew.
