(Friday, January 21, 1966) — George Harrison, 22, of The Beatles married actress and model Patricia Anne “Pattie” Boyd, 21, today in a ceremony at a registry office in Ashley Road, Epsom.

With John Lennon and Ringo Starr out of town on vacation with their wives, Paul McCartney was the only other Beatle in the country and stood in as best man.

Harrison is the third Beatle to marry, leaving Paul McCartney the only bachelor of the British rock band.

(Saturday, January 8, 1966) — The North American version of the album Rubber Soul by The Beatles peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard‘s 200 album chart for six consecutive weeks (Jan. 8/15/22/29, Feb. 5/12, 1966).

It was the group’s seventh of a record 19 number one albums on the chart (1964-2001).

In 2012, Rubber Soul was ranked number five on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
