(Friday, July 3, 1970, 7:00 p.m. PDT) — The radio music countdown show American Top 40 made its debut tonight on KDEO in El Cajon, California (now KECR), with Casey Kasem as host, playing the most recent list of Top 40 most popular songs as ranked by Billboard magazine for the preceding week.

The chart data broadcast actually included the top 40 songs from the week ending July 11, 1970.

The first show featured the last time both The Beatles (“The Long and Winding Road” at #8) and Elvis Presley (“The Wonder Of You” at #9) had songs simultaneously in the Top 10.
