The Monkees hold first official recording session 50 years ago this hour (June 10 1966)

(Friday, June 10, 1966, 7:00 p.m. PDT) — Ten days after starting production on their television series, The Monkees held their first official recording session tonight at RCA Hollywood with Snuff Garret producing.

Garrett attempted to record two songs before the session came to a halt. The band had protested vigorously to Garret’s declaration that member David Jones would be the group’s lead singer going forward.

Garrett’s takes of “Take A Giant Step” and “Let’s Dance On” were lost.
