Nixon describes encounter with Ray Coniff Singers’ protest 40 years ago today (1972)

(Saturday, January 29, 1972) — In a recorded telephone conversation with John Connally, U.S. President Richard M. Nixon describes what happened the previous night when a woman with the Ray Coniff singers pulled a small silk banner from the lowcut bosom of her blue evening gown and displayed it.

French Pay Homage To Dead Marshal 60 years ago today (1952)

(Wednesday, January 16, 1952) — The church and the army joined today in Paris in a glittering spectacle to honor Gen. Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, a French military hero of World War II and commander in the First Indochina War who died January 11.

Kennedy advisers arrive in Vietnam 50 years ago today (1961)

(Wednesday, October 18, 1961) — Two key advisers to U.S. President John F. Kennedy, General Maxwell Taylor and Walt Rostow, arrived today in Saigon, South Vietnam.

Their visit coincided with a serious flood. They would recommend a big increase in military aid, including U.S. combat troops disguised as flood fighters.

President Ngo Dinh Diem would say no to the troops. He needed U.S. support, but he wanted to keep control, and he wanted to keep the foreigners out.
