(Wednesday May 31, 1916, 3:48 p.m. CEST; during World War I) — The Battle of Jutland, a naval battle fought by the British Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet against the Imperial German Navy’s High Seas Fleet, began today in the North Sea, near the coast of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula.

The battle ended the next morning with a strategic British victory. There was no clear-cut victor, although the British suffered heavier losses.

(Sunday, January 9, 1916, during the Gallipoli Campaign, part of the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I) — Allied forces today completed a full retreat from the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, ending a disastrous invasion of the Ottoman Empire.

The Gallipoli Campaign resulted in 250,000 Allied casualties and greatly discredited Allied military command. Roughly an equal number of Turks were killed or wounded.

This would involve taking off more than 93,000 troops, 200 guns and more than 5,000 animals as well as vast quantities of stores and ammunition.
