(Tuesday, November 3, 1936, during the 1936 presidential campaign) — Democratic incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York was re-elected today over Republican Governor Alf Landon of Kansas with the largest percentage of the popular vote in U.S. to this date.

Roosevelt and his running mate, Vice President John Nance Garner of Texas, overwhelmingly defeated Landon and his running mate, newspaper publisher Frank Knox of Illinois, 60.80%-36.54% in the national popular vote, resulting in a 523-8 victory in the Electoral College (FDR’s 98.5% of the electoral vote is the highest ever in two-party competition).

Roosevelt and Garner would be sworn in for their second four-year terms next year on the new inaugural date of January 20.
