(Tuesday, August 7, 1962) — U.S. President John F. Kennedy awarded Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official Dr. Frances O. Kelsey the Distinguished Federal Civilian Service Medal today for her diligence in blocking approval of thalidomide, a sedative found to cause severe birth defects.

(Monday, August 7, 1882) — The famous feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky erupted into full-scale violence today when when Ellison Hatfield, brother of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, was fatally wounded by three of Roseanna McCoy’s young brothers (Tolbert, Pharmer and Bud) during an election day fight that took place in Kentucky.

(Friday, August 4, 1972) — Arthur Bremer was convicted and sentenced today in Upper Marlboro, Md., to 63 years in prison for his attempt on the life of U.S. Democratic presidential candidate George Wallace. The governor of Alabama was shot on May 15, 1972, in Laurel, Maryland, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down for life.

(Monday, August 3, 1992)Unforgiven, a dark Western film that deals frankly with the uglier aspects of violence and the myth of the Old West, premiered today in Los Angeles.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film starred Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris. It would go on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
