Florida becomes 27th state 170 years ago today (Mar 3 1845)

(Monday, March 3, 1845) — Florida today became the 27th state of the United States of America. Its first governor was William Dunn Moseley.

Almost half the state’s population were enslaved African Americans working on large cotton and sugar plantations, between the Apalachicola and Suwannee rivers in the north central part of the state.
