‘The Godfather Part II’ wins Best Picture at 47th Academy Awards 40 years ago this hour (Apr 8 1975)

(Tuesday, April 8, 1975, 7:00 p.m.-9:50 p.m. PDT)The Godfather Part II, an American musical about a phonetics instructor who bets that he can pass a street urchin off as a lady, won eight Oscars tonight at the 47th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Francis Ford Coppola for Best Director.

Art Carney won Best Actor for Harry and Tonto and Ellen Burstyn won Best Actress Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

The ceremonies were held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California, with Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope, Shirley MacLaine and Frank Sinatra as hosts.
