Beatle George Harrison marries Pattie Boyd 50 years ago today (Jan 21 1966)

(Friday, January 21, 1966) — George Harrison, 22, of The Beatles married actress and model Patricia Anne “Pattie” Boyd, 21, today in a ceremony at a registry office in Ashley Road, Epsom.

With John Lennon and Ringo Starr out of town on vacation with their wives, Paul McCartney was the only other Beatle in the country and stood in as best man.

Harrison is the third Beatle to marry, leaving Paul McCartney the only bachelor of the British rock band.

Britain’s King George V dies at his home in Norfolk 80 years ago this hour (Jan 20 1936)

(Monday, January 20, 1936, at 11:55 p.m. GMT) — Britain’s King George V, 70, died tonight in his bedroom at Sandringham House in Norfolk after his physician, Lord Dawson of Penn, injected the mortally ill monarch with morphine and cocaine to hasten his death.

The king was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who would abdicate the throne 11 months later to marry American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson.

U.S. observes first federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. 30 years ago today (Jan 20 1986)

(Monday, January 20, 1986) — Singing the ballads of the civil rights movement, thousands of people marched slowly through Atlanta today as the nation marked the first Federal holiday honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is buried, and in cities across the country, church bells tolled, choirs sang and citizens paused to remember the slain civil rights leader, eulogized in speeches and services as the nation’s “drum major for justice and peace.”

(January 19, 1976) — Promoter Bill Sargent offered The Beatles at least $30 million today to reunite for a concert in the U.S., six years after the English rock group (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) disbanded.

Sargent estimated that the reunion show could gross up to $300 million, but they refused.
