(Friday, March 11, 1966, evening local time) — The “Transition to the New Order” took place tonight in Indonesia when President Sukarno signed a document that effectively surrendered nearly all of his powers to his Defense Minister, General Suharto, leaving Sukarno as the nominal head of state but only a figurehead.
