(Saturday March 15, 1986) — Former Beatle George Harrison joined an all-star finale at Heartbeat ’86, a marathon charity rock concert tonight at the National Exhibition Centre near Birmingham, England, performing “Johnny B. Goode.”

The concert, which attracted a capacity 11,500 audience who paid gate receipts of £200,000, was videotaped by BBC Television and broadcast on Aug. 2, 1986.

U.S. troops cross Mexican border to hunt for Pancho Villa 100 years ago this hour (Mar 15 1916)

(Thursday, March 15, 1916, 12:00 p.m. local time; during the Mexican Revolution) — A U.S. expeditionary force of more than 4,000 troops led by Brig. Gen. John J. Pershing entered Mexico today on an ultimately futile mission to capture Pancho Villa, whose raiders had attacked Columbus, New Mexico, killing 18 U.S. citizens.

(Friday, March 15, 1946) — British Prime Minister Clement Attlee declared in the House of Commons today the government’s intention to grant British India the right to full independence and not merely dominion status.

“India herself must choose as to what will be her future situation and her position in the world,” said Attlee, adding that “If … she elects for independence—and in our view she has a right to do so—it will be for us to help make the transition as smooth and easy as possible.”
